Dr. Robert Fieldman, M.D. & Dr. Joshua Fiske, M.D. New Procedures at Short Hills Surgery Center
The professional and extraordinarily productive environment at Short Hills Surgery Center has led a number of our physician-partners exploring the use of new technologies and procedures to achieve ever better patient outcomes.
ENT specialist Dr. Robert Fieldman has been using a new technology for tonsillectomy procedures at the Center called a Coblator. “With Coblation technology, we shave (instead of cut) the tonsil away, leaving a thin membrane capsule with no tonsil tissue left,” says Dr. Fieldman. “The end result is that our patients’ throats are much less sore after surgery, and the risk of post operative bleeding declines because of the capsule membrane that’s left behind.”
Dr. Fieldman received his degree from Tulane Medical Schools and served his ENT residency at Cornell. But as much as he believes in advancing medical science through the use of new technology, he’s convinced that some of the “old ways” are still very effective treatments. In fact, he recommends ice cream as a post-operative therapy for kids after tonsillectomies!
Another example of state-of-the-art surgery performed at the Center is a new minimally invasive technique to treat urinary incontinence in women performed by Urologist Dr. Joshua Fiske.
Stress Incontinence is a common problem for women. A weakness in the pelvic muscles, usually after childbirth, allows for leakage of urine with coughing, sneezing or laughing. Sometimes the leakage can be severe enough to require women to wear pads or diapers to prevent embarrassing situations.
Until recently, the surgical procedures available required long surgical time, a catheter post operatively, and an overnight hospital stay. Dr. Fiske’s minimally invasive TVTO (Tension Free Vaginal Tape Obturator) approach, on the other hand, takes about 20 minutes… and the patient is able to go home the same day, without a urinary catheter. “The patient feels better immediately,” says Dr. Fiske. “Their quality of life brightens – literally in minutes. They go home smiling. It’s a great feeling to see patients respond that way.”
Dr. Fiske received his MD from NYU and served his residency at NYU/Bellevue Medical Center in Manhattan. He sees patients at his offices in West Orange, Kearny, Roselle Park and Westfield.
