Dr. Jan Huston, M.D. General Surgery; Breast Cancer Specialist
“It’s hard to imagine something more frightening for a woman than thinking she might have breast cancer,” says Dr. Jan Huston, who specializes in breast cancer surgery and treatment.
“Over the years, it became clear to me how vital it was in certain situations for a woman to be cared for by a woman. That’s why we started Summit Breast Care 6 years ago.”
Short Hills Surgery Center provides an environment and technology that enables Dr. Huston and her partners, Dr. Michelle O'Shea and Dr. Diana Addis, to provide one-on-one continuity of care to their patients. “For example, we perform Stereotactic Breast Biopsies, an alternative to open or surgical biopsies, at the Center,” she said. “Using state-of-the-art computer-aided imaging to calculate precise coordinates, a sample of suspect breast tissue is removed with a needle. The Center’s anesthesiologists help ensure a minimum of discomfort, and recovery time is quite short. Our patients appreciate that they don’t have to go to an unfamiliar radiologist for the procedure. The Center allows us to be with them every step of the way.”
Originally from Wisconsin, Dr. Huston received her medical degree at Michigan State and served her residency at St. Barnabus in Livingston, N.J. She’s been the president of the American Cancer Society Essex County Unit since 1996 and is on the board of Medical Advisors of the Susan G. Komen Foundation. Dr. Huston has been listed in New York magazine’s “Top Doctors” list since 1999 and in their “Top Doctors for Women” list since 2003.
